I'll Do Anything

Part 10

"Are you going to get up sometime today Maxwell?" Wu Fei laid across Trowa's bed and pulled the cover from the American's head.

"No!" Duo snapped and yanked the cover from his alarm.

"Come on Duo, it's already nine thirty." Trowa added as he tried to fix his tie. He had seen Quatre do it a million times, but for some odd reason, he could never get it right.

"I don't care." Duo whined. "I can miss breakfast once."

"You miss a meal?" Wu Fei joked as he yanked the pillow from under Duo's head. "That'll be the day."

"Damnit Wu Fei! Let me sleep! You think it's easy sleeping on the damn floor all night?" Since there was only two beds, Duo had made his sleeping arrangements on the left side of Trowa's bed, closest to the wall. He chose to sleep by Trowa because he knew that Wu Fei would annoy him like he was now. He wanted by the wall for fear of being stepped on in the morning or throughout the night.

"Don't look for sympathy, because that is thick shag carpet. It's probably more comfortable than the beds." The Preventer informed and slammed the pillow against Duo's covered head.

"Damnit!"

"Wu Fei, let him sleep. He's had a rough night." Trowa said and gave up on the tie. Quatre could fix it to his liking at breakfast.

"Why is it that we have to dress like this for everything?" Wu Fei wondered and stood up. He walked over to Trowa and began fixing the tie.

"It's all because of Quatre's sisters."

"Sisters or sister?"

"Sister." Trowa corrected.

"Figures. Does she know that you and. . ."

"No. Just us and you." Wu Fei nodded toward Duo and Trowa shook his head. There was a short knock on the door. A second later, the door opened and Heero poked his head inside.

"Morning." Wu Fei called as he finished Trowa's tie. Heero nodded.

"Something wrong?" Trowa wondered, noting the look in Heero's eyes.

"I was wondering if I could talk to you Trowa?" Duo tensed as he heard Heero's voice. He wondered if the Japanese man could see him where he was laying.

"Well, I'll see you guys at breakfast." Wu Fei excused himself from the room.

"What's wrong?" Trowa asked as Heero closed the door and leaned against it.

"I was just wondering if you were truly happy with Quatre."

"I am."

"Then people like us can be happy?"

"We're human Heero, there's nothing wrong with wanting or being happy." A small silence descended.

"When you proposed to Quatre, did you know you wanted to be with him? Did you know that he was going to make you happy?"

"I did."

"Did you ever doubt it? Do you doubt it now?"

"No."

"Has he?"

"Not that I know of. Heero, what happened?"

"Relena. . .broke off our engagement." Duo's heart soared. There was still a chance then? A chance for him to slip in and steal his Perfect Solider out of nowhere.

"What? Why?"

"She wants me to step back and make sure I want this."

"You can't blame her for not wanting to make a mistake. There's no sense in marrying someone when you're not sure it's going to work."

"I don't know what I want any more Trowa." Heero's whisper was barely audible. "Everything has changed so much so fast that I don't even know what to think or feel anymore. How can things change so much?"

"Sounds to me that you're scared. You're getting too serious too fast." Heero looked up at his friend. Trowa was a little amazed to find that what was once the Perfect Solider was incredibly close to crying.

"A decision was made. I was always able to stick to that decision before, why can't I now?"

"Because before it was someone else's decision. Someone told you what to do. Now you're making your own choices and you're finding that it isn't always as easy to make your own compared to someone telling you. I've been there Heero. I know what you're going through."

"What should I do?"

"Take Relena's advice. Take time to step back and look at what you have with her." Trowa studied his confused friend and knew the next question before it was spoken. "There's nothing wrong with doing that Heero. You don't want to spend the rest of your life with someone you don't love."

"Did you ever. . ." His voice trailed off.

"Yes. Quatre and I did call it quits for a while. We went through the same thing. We rushed and I got scared. It's not easy to welcome back emotions that was locked away so long."

"How long did it take you to realize what you wanted?"

"Almost a year."

"What if. . ."

"Heero, if she loves you, she'll wait for you. She'll wait until you're ready." Duo silently cursed the ex-Heavyarms pilot. He was promoting Relena. He wasn't supposed to be boosting Relena. He was supposed to be getting him and Heero back together. "Is this because of Duo?" Trowa wondered boldly. Duo held his breath and waited for a response. His heart cried for Heero to agree with their friend.

"Things between me and Duo are over. I don't think it could ever be revived." Tears spilled over Duo's eyes. That was all he needed to hear. He buried his face deeply into the pillows and wept silently. Hearing those words form in Heero's own voice was more than he could take.

"Heero?" Duo heard Relena's voice from the opposite side of the door and he felt like screaming at her. He somehow managed to keep his outbursts from escaping as he gripped the pillow in a white knuckled hold.

"Give me a minute." Heero answered through the door and he could hear her soft retreating footfalls. He then turned to face Trowa. "We should head on down to breakfast."

"You go ahead." Trowa suggested.

"Aren't you coming?" Trowa shook his head and received a concerned look from Heero.

"I'm not really hungry." Trowa answered without taking his eyes from his friend. "Just tell Quatre I'm not there because of what we talked about last night." Heero appeared confused. "He'll understand."

Once Heero was gone, Trowa quickly walked over to Duo. The American had his face buried so deeply into the pillows that Trowa thought for sure he was trying to smother himself. Without hesitation, he pulled the braided man from the pillows and forced him to lay on his back.

"Stop it Trowa." Duo cried and kept his eyes closed. "I don't want to live. I can't live. Not without him."

"Duo. . ." Trowa pinned his wrists against the blankets and sat on his stomach to cease any further attempts of freedom.

"Please, if you're any kind of friend, you'll leave me alone."

"I'm your friend, and I won't leave you alone." He held firmly against the opposing wrists. He couldn't believe how much stronger the American had gotten over the years. He held Duo down until the trembling body calmed considerably. It was then that he realized that Duo had fallen asleep.

Late afternoon sunlight nudged Duo awake. Reluctantly, he gave in to the bright light and turned on his back. He was a little surprised to find Wu Fei watching over him. Confused, Duo sat up. He looked around wondering how he had gotten on Trowa's bed. The last thing he remembered was sleeping on the floor.

"Glad you're awake Maxwell." Duo laid back down as he remembered the events of that morning. Remembered Heero saying that things between them were over. That they could never be revived. This memory only brought more tears to Duo's eyes. "I figured you might be hungry." Wu Fei said as he sat on the edge of the bed and gently rubbed Duo's back.

"I'm not hungry." The American whispered and closed his eyes in hopes of blocking out the world.

"You should eat something Duo." He ignored Wu Fei's advice. "Maybe you should tell Yuy how you feel."

"Why? So he can laugh at me?"

"I don't think he'll laugh."

"How would you know?" Duo snapped and hugged the pillows closer. "It wouldn't do any good. He said things were over. He means what he says."

"Maybe he just feels that way because of the way you're acting." Duo looked up at the Preventer.

"So I'm supposed to act like this in front of him? Yeah, that'll make him come back. I'll make him pity me. Then he'll come running to take care of poor fucking pitiful Duo."

"It was just a suggestion."

"Fuck you Wu Fei. I don't know what makes you the person to give advice about relationships. It's not like you're a big shot on the subject, so do both of a favor and shut the fuck up!" Had it been any other time, he would have told Duo a ear full, but given the situation he let it slide. "I don't know why you're being so nice all of a sudden." He muttered more to himself than the person he was talking to. Wu Fei overlooked that too. Wordlessly, he pushed the covers away and climbed off the bed. He pulled on the first pair of pants and shirt he found.

"Where are you going?" Duo didn't say anything as he left the room. Wu Fei jumped to his feet to follow him.

Heero stepped out onto the balcony. He needed time alone. Time to think. Somehow, he couldn't think about him and Relena. He could only think of Duo. Duo hadn't come to bed last night, and he couldn't sleep. He worried about him, and wondered where he was most of the night. He aimlessly scanned the crowd of Quatre's sisters and friends that were gathered in the yard below having lunch. Without meaning too, he remembered that night.

"I'm sick of this Heero!" Duo cried, tears spilling from his violet eyes. Heero remained silent as he stared at the liquid of sorrow. "I'm tired of always arguing. I want to be like Trowa and Quatre."

"Duo, we can't be like that because we're not them."

"Because you're not trying. You're not even trying and that's why we can't."

"I'm doing everything I can."

"No you're not. You're trying to keep this Perfect Solider routine. You're not a solider any more Heero. Why can't you see that? Why can't you understand that you're no longer needed to be a solider?" Heero only stared at his lover a moment before turning to leave. "Don't leave Heero. We need to talk."

"We'll talk later." Was all he said as he grabbed his jacket.

"No, now Heero!"

"Duo, all we're going to do is yell at each other."

"Why should this be any different? Don't walk out that door!. . .Heero!" The next thing he heard was the door closing.

The house was dark except the living room. Heero figured that his partner had went to sleep or was waiting for him. Probably the latter. He sighed deeply and ascended the stairs to the front door. He had thought long and hard about the events earlier that evening. Duo was right. He was afraid to give up his stony exterior, but he loved him. He was worth destroying that wall of silence that had been keeping others out. If anyone could reduce that wall to rubble it was Duo. Heero decided that that was what he wanted. All he had to do was tell Duo.

As he entered the house, he was a little surprised to find that the living room was empty. However, there were several beer bottles setting on the table. A couple of them were knocked over and spilling onto the floor. That didn't matter. All that matter right now was talking to Duo and telling him his decision. Forgetting about the living room and the beer bottles, he headed toward their bedroom.

He had only taken a step when he heard someone moan. Instinctively, he withdrew his hidden gun and advanced toward the room. The closer he got, the louder the moans. He was now able to interpret the sound as those of pleasure. A heavy feeling consumed his heart as he silently grasped the doorknob. Something wasn't right. For some odd reason, he felt like crying. He gripped the handle tightly, wondering why he was hesitating.

The moans ceased and Heero listened for another sign of movement in the room. Swallowing hard, he pushed open the door and quickly turned on the light. The gun fell to the floor with a soft thud. Duo pulled from the kiss and looked up at the colbat eyes of his lover. The American was laying completely naked on the bed. The man positioned between his legs wasn't Heero, but their neighbor. The same neighbor that had been making passes at Duo ever since they moved in. The same neighbor that Duo swore meant nothing to him. The same neighbor that Heero was told that he would never have to worry about.

Heero felt that someone had just punched him in the stomach. He couldn't move. Couldn't think. Couldn't find his voice. He didn't want to believe his eyes. This couldn't be happening. His Duo would never cheat on him, and yet he was. Tears burned the blue eyes, but were kept at bay by the years of training. Not knowing what else to do, Heero turned and left the room, closing the door behind him.

Now he realized that he had acted childishly. He loved Duo. It took the separation to figure that out. He should have stayed that night. Should have waited for the explanation. Should have. . . His thoughts were interrupted as the door to the bedroom was slammed open. Turning around, he discovered Quatre and Duo barging into the room.

"Duo, stop please." Quatre pleaded.

"Fuck you Quatre!" Duo screamed and began packing his things.

"Look, I know you're upset. . ."

"Upset? Upset? You think this is upset?!"

"Duo, if you stop drinking, it won't be as bad as you think it is."

"Don't tell me what to do!" He spun to face the blonde. "I'm not staying here any longer."

"What happened Duo? Can't you at least answer that?"

"What the Hell do you think happened?!" He emptied the bottle of beer before continuing. "I'm sick of this. I'm sick of you and your fucking perfect wedding. I'm sick of Wu Fei and Trowa being against me. I'm sick of everything."
"They're not against you Duo. They're only trying to help you."

"You call this helping?" Duo demanded and pulled up either sleeve of his jacket. Both of his wrists were severely bruised.

"What happened?"

"You're damn fiancee held me down this morning!" Duo screamed and grabbed his duffel bag.

"Trowa? Why would he do that?"

"What the fuck you think he did it for?" Duo sneered and left the room. Anger waged through Heero. Trowa hurt Duo? The bruises on the American's wrist was more than enough evidence. Was Wu Fei in on it too? What kind of sick scenario was going on? Heero clutched both fist in determination. He was going to find out what happened. As soon as he was done with the two ex-pilots, he was going to find Duo and somehow beg him for a second chance. It was clear to him now what he wanted. He had to be with Duo, or at least he had to tell him how he felt. He turned around and spotted the Latin sitting with Wu Fei, Catherine, Novia, and Kanissa. Without a second thought, Heero stormed from the balcony.

"Well, I guess I can wait." Novia laughed nervously as she rubbed her arm, causing everyone else to laugh except Trowa.

"I don't think you'll be getting much of a choice young lady." Kanissa informed after taking a sip of her beverage.

"Guess not." Novia smiled brightly and stole a look at Wu Fei. There was a sneaky grin plaguing his lips. The others were so engrossed in their conversation that the only ones to notice Heero quickly approaching were Trowa and Wu Fei. Trowa watched him from the corner of his eye. He wasn't for sure, but he had a feeling that the bodyguard wasn't too happy with something. The dark gleam in the colbat was all too familiar to him. It was the same look Heero got on the battlefield. Trowa glanced over at Wu Fei. The Preventer seemed to have noticed that too.

Upon his arrival, Trowa stood to greet his friend. The only greeting that was returned was a left jab. Wu Fei sprang to his feet and placed himself in front of Heero. He didn't know what was going on, but this sort of violence was meaningless.

"Heero, what's wrong?" Trowa asked once he finally realized what had happened.

"Did you cause the bruises on Duo's wrists?" Heero glared pass the China man to the stunned emeralds.

"Yes." Heero tried to push pass Wu Fei, but failed.

"You bastard!"

"Heero I had to." Trowa explained as he lowered his voice so that only the three of them could hear. "If I hadn't, he was going to commit suicide." This statement seemed to have calmed the mad man. He stared into the emeralds wondering if any truth was held in them.
